Windows 11 with heavy resource usage
Windows 11 with heavy resource usage
I have switched to w11 from w10 and checked the system stats (AMD software: Adrenalin edition). It looks like w11 is consuming significantly more resources compared to w10. The RAM usage appears to be around 2 or 3GB higher and VRAM usage about 1 or 2GB higher. When started alone, w11 uses 7.8GB of RAM and 4GB of VRAM, whereas w10 uses 6GB of RAM and 950MB of VRAM. There seems to be no clear way to reduce RAM consumption on w11, so it might be better to revert to w10 unless you're comfortable with the performance difference.
Remove all the apps or software you don’t really need for daily use. This will reduce RAM consumption and also slow down boot and load times. W11 uses more resources than 10 because it’s a more advanced OS and current, though it costs more power. If it’s that bad, consider doubling your RAM. I have 64GB of DDR4 but plan to upgrade to 128GB of DDR5 for better performance.
W11 includes certain sliders in settings that let the PC put programs to sleep once they're not actively being used for a brief period. Edge and Chrome also support this behavior, especially with unused tabs, and they can run in the background when closed. There are efficiency mode and gaming mode options that adjust these features accordingly. Overall, W11 appears to handle memory management more effectively than W10 did.
I cleared out everything unnecessary and stopped using it. I plan to upgrade my RAM to 64 or 128, but I’ll wait until I can get an AM5 upgrade if there’s a good deal. My main question is why W11 is consuming so much VRAM during idle after startup—it seems unusual to me.
so far i've enjoyed the experience of w11 and made several adjustments, which have been helpful. i created a clone of my os on another m.2 and upgraded to w11 on one of them, so i've set up dual boot testing and benchmarking. the high vram consumption after booting and when idle on 11 is puzzling me. i plan to check the efficiency mode and game mode settings.
