Hi everyone. I’m reaching out for some advice. I’m running a custom-built PC with Windows 11 Pro version 10.0.2261 Build 22621. About three days ago, I installed the latest Windows updates. Over the past few years, except for swapping a few hard drives for SSDs, I haven’t made any significant hardware changes. My main modifications are limited to a couple of storage upgrades. My full parts list is available here: https://pcpartpicker.com/b/BqHhP6 Most recently, the only notable updates have been the Windows 11 releases. Recently, when I performed a complete system reboot, my PC would restart itself at unpredictable moments—sometimes hours, sometimes just minutes. Occasionally it stays off for extended periods, but it always comes back on randomly. To stop this from happening, I’ve shut down the machine completely and disabled the PSU kill switch to prevent random restarts. A few things to note: I’m fairly comfortable with Windows settings, so it’s not a simple sleep or hibernate scenario. Instead, these are full shutdown procedures. My power button triggers a full shutdown when pressed, and I often use the Start menu → Power icon → Shut Down sequence. Both methods result in random reboots. Recently, I searched online and reviewed my advanced power settings. The current configurations I have were:

- Sleep after: Never (no sleep enabled)
- Allow hybrid sleeping: off
- Hibernate after: never
- Allow wake timers: disabled

Other options like USB Selective suspend or PCI Express power management were also checked, but they don’t seem to be the cause. In my BIOS, I disabled Fast Startup and set Power Management to Off in shutdown settings. It worked for a while, so I’m testing whether changing these could help.

I’ll be using the system for a couple of hours now. Most USB ports are connected to random peripherals, so I’m wondering if one might be triggering these unexpected restarts. In my Gigabyte X570 Xtreme BIOS, there’s an ERP setting under Power. It should keep USB ports active after shutdown. I confirmed it was off, so I enabled it to disable them.

Anyone else have ideas? I’d appreciate suggestions if the ERP option isn’t enough. I’d rather avoid repeatedly hitting the PSU kill switch than risk further instability. Thanks ahead for your help!

I experienced a similar issue recently, which really frustrated me. It would shut down and restart itself repeatedly. Turns out it was a stuck key on my keyboard, haha. I also had one of my external HDDs restart if I didn’t unplug it before powering off. It seems like you’ve encountered all the possible causes, but everything is inconsistent. Do you have a wake-on-LAN configuration in your BIOS? Also, are you near a busy street? Vibrations from desks and heavy trucks have affected me before, though my house was far from the road and the PC was close to it. Cars hitting the house have happened too. It’s definitely a challenging place to live, lol. I sold that house years ago thankfully.

I own numerous USB devices including a couple of hard drives, an audio interface, a Corsair keyboard/mousepad/mouse with RGB support, etc. It seems the system only activates when you hibernate or put the PC to sleep—full shutdowns. I haven’t used hibernate or sleep mode before. I verified my BIOS and 'Wake on LAN' was enabled, so I’ve turned that off as well. I’m hoping disabling the USB ports during shutdown will resolve the problem. Appreciate your help!

Just to confirm, your PC stayed off all day yesterday after you turned off 'Wake on Lan' and switched ERP to disable USB ports during shutdown. Everything seems fine so far. I'll keep checking this over the weekend. If it doesn't restart by itself in the coming days, I'll suspect one of these BIOS options fixed the problem. Appreciate your response!
