Windows 11 Recover Woes
Family members' laptop performance has greatly decreased. All indications suggest a damaged Windows installation. (Explorer fails to launch, making it hard to reach settings) They tried running the Windows repair tool or something similar. To preserve files, they opted for a partial reinstall instead of a complete reset. The process worked smoothly; the system now starts almost instantly. However, they’re using a pin for login and now need the original password, which they don’t remember. Windows stores a password key file, but generating it before the reset would have been necessary. Overall, things are frustrating. The question is: What should we do next? I’m feeling overwhelmed. Back in the past, there were ways to handle this, but it’s been a while. What’s the best way forward?
I ran the Windows recovery utility. The selected route didn’t erase the system completely, leaving the user account and files still safe so no password was needed during setup. Now I’m stuck because I can’t access the recovery screen to perform a full wipe (which isn’t what I want).
