I owned an older PC from 2011 that shut down quicker than my current setup (it ran Windows 10). After building a new gaming PC, I observed it takes 3 to 5 minutes to power off and around 30 seconds to boot up. There are few background apps running. I turned off fast startup and tried some terminal commands without success. I play games via Steam and Battle.net but turn them off before shutdown.
This problem is usually resolved by updating the motherboard chipset drivers.
Also, it might be connected to storage issues—check how full your storage drives are.
Hello pcbuilder777, I'm curious if you're doing something similar to what I used to do. For about 20 years, I used the X button in the top right corner of the screen to close Steam and then turn off the PC. Only when the game was working well did I realize that after exiting Steam, my PC would take a long time to shut down, which I thought was satisfactory. I mentioned this on the forum, and someone suggested that maybe you were clicking the word "Steam" at the top left and then clicking Exit... but I wasn't doing that.
They look quite bare. The drive labeled G at the bottom of the picture is a CD-ROM slot.
I timed three shut downs after installing the chip set drivers.
Shut down one took 1 minute and 7 seconds.
Shut down two was 1 minute and 12 seconds.
Shut down three took 2 minutes and 17 seconds.
These durations are quicker than before.
I checked all of them by launching a game, then closing it and shutting down.
My taskbar has AMD adrenalin and Windows defender running.
