While attempting tasks, I observed unusual actions: all folders on both C and D drives were locked as read-only. This setting had never been applied before, and its purpose remains unclear. I’m using Windows 11 Pro 24H2 (possibly due to unexpected update issues). One folder I attempted to modify has full access for my local account, yet it repeatedly reverts to read-only. I ran diagnostics with `sfc /scannow` and `chkdsk C: /f`, then restarted the system, but the issue continues. I’m uncertain what’s causing this, as it hinders my work. It’s worth mentioning I run BitDefender, but never experienced this problem on an older machine. The PC is only a few months old, and with new hardware it shouldn’t stem from old Windows configurations. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Update: Removed BitDefender, turned off ransomware protection, but the problem remains. Edited December 8, 2025 by Krolic Update

It might not be feasible, but my first step would be to reset everything and start over. I wouldn’t even attempt repairs, honestly—this is just too much damage. If that didn’t work, I’d think the drive is completely failed.

I'm curious about this, though it's a big job. I checked CrystalDiskInfo and it shows the drive is fully healthy.

Ssds can become read-only upon shutdown. A simple test involves creating a bootable linux USB and copying data onto the ssd. If this doesn’t work, the drive is likely in read-only mode to prevent further issues. It seems there might have been a misconfiguration, so consider reinstalling the system.

Both C: and D: are likely on the SSD, while the HDD remains on D:. A drive turning read-only often indicates a failing component, but having the HDD also become read-only suggests another issue. Check if BitLock is enabled and disable it if needed. CrystalDiskInfo didn’t show any errors—please share a screenshot of that tool for further review.

Two solid-state drives, each with M2 technology—one D-drive and one C-drive. No encryption methods like BitLocker are used. The C-drive SSD is relatively new, just a few months old.

Consider splitting the storage and set up Linux directly, or perform the installation using a bootable USB drive.

Install Linux on a bootable USB drive. A locked hard drive might restrict partition setup.

It's not about the filesystem, is it? This happens at the hardware side.

I experienced this problem before because of a setting change I made; I’m not sure where to find a fix. Would you like me to reinstall W11?
