Hey there! Yes, it’s possible to upgrade to Windows 11 with your i7-4790k Devils Canon (Haswell). However, keep in mind the potential downsides. Security updates might not be available for older hardware, and some games won’t run on Linux either. Just check the latest support info before you go. Thanks!

Rufus allows you to build a Win11 installer without needing TPM 2.0, making it compatible with any x86-based system. I’ve used it on my 4790K and it functioned perfectly.

From a possible drawback perspective, I haven’t noticed significant problems using Windows 11 on older devices. Some very outdated machines stopped functioning after a recent update, though there are many generations between those systems and a 4th-gen Intel processor. Even in the rare scenario where this happens, you’re essentially back to the same situation as with Windows 10, missing important security patches.

Newer Windows 11 features rely on a particular instruction set that older x86 chips lack and can't be fixed via registry tweaks. I don't recall the precise details, but it seems around 2007 processors are the cutoff. The 4790K should work with 11.

I performed an installer using Rufus for my i5 4570 and everything functioned perfectly. I’m receiving security updates now. It seems you might need to encounter a few additional steps—perhaps using an older mode of the tool—to complete the process, as it’s been a while since I last ran the installation.
