I question this. Likely many received what was provided without cost when setting up the account, which suggests they wouldn’t restrict it to just OneDrive.

I'll monitor the developer channels for any new DRM updates. It's possible they could offer developers keys on the Windows Store to sign their applications.

It's just a minor update. It reminds me of headlines like "BREAKING: an employee called sick at AMD!" or discussions around patent approvals. If it wasn't widely known before and now gets attention because it passed approval, that makes sense. But this topic has been mentioned before.

I don't see how it is small news, Microsoft now have the means to block any download they define as illegal.

Patents are essentially acknowledgments of copyright for a particular way of doing things. This means if someone else replicates the same approach, Microsoft can claim it was an intentional copy. Legal evidence can show the concept belongs to them. The firm doesn’t have to wait for patent clearance before securing it, there’s no ethical or regulatory hurdle, and they don’t even need to create the invention themselves. Major corporations usually have a formal process where employees are given time to refine their ideas for approval, complete paperwork, and the company covers all costs. Of course, ownership stays with the company, but including the employee’s name on the record adds significant professional value.
