Windows 10 with two boot drives available.
Hi everyone. I just purchased a M.2 970 EVO and want to use it as my boot drive. I’m planning a fresh installation since my Windows is an OEM key. Can I use the same key for this new drive, and will everything else work the same? Also, can I keep the old drive active under the same key because it’s still connected to the same motherboard?
Ot connects seamlessly with your motherboard. As long as the board matches, Windows 10 will work without problems. Avoid that. The activation process might notice this and flag an issue, potentially blocking your key. To keep files moving, disconnect the old drive during the installation of your new SSD. This ensures the boot partition stays on the first detected drive, even if it's still SATA instead of M.2. After installation, restart and reconnect your old drive. Windows should ignore the old hard drive once installed. If it boots from the old drive after plugging in, adjust the boot sequence in BIOS/UEFI. While setting up Windows 10 cleanly, verify your UEFI settings: enable CSM, turn off XMP profiles (or equivalent for AMD), set HPET to 64-bit, ensure AHCI mode is active, activate SecureBoot.
Remove the previous storage device from the system. Set up the new SSD and perform a fresh installation of Windows 10. After configuring all drivers and ensuring everything functions properly, turn it on. After that, replace the old drive, delete any necessary files, and reformat it as the primary drive for data storage.
