It seems Avast wouldn't modify files directly; it would likely just send a warning. That behavior is unusual for antivirus software. My first thought was a cryptolocker, since such changes usually indicate malicious writing. An AV shouldn't alter processed files. That was my initial idea. Now it's gone, and it's late—I'm heading to bed.
Heh, back in the day I used Avast and found it a bit too intrusive. Makes me wonder how it affects search results—probably not the best experience. Could be a different antivirus tool altogether.
Avast wasn't the one promoting its customer search results; MCaffee seems more involved. The main annoyance with Avast is those popups urging me to use a VPN occasionally. I usually ignore them and still prefer Avast, though I haven’t explored other options much. Maybe my last purchase of an antivirus was unnecessary because I realized I don’t really need it anymore.
