Received a full desktop image without any alert about the update—possibly from Windows 10 itself or something malicious. (Unlikely to be the case) Can you revert it back to its original state? I’d rather have a subtle white box in the bottom-left corner instead of a bold green circle. When did this change start, and is it truly from Windows? I recall messing with file associations in Win7, which caused Adobe to open all .lnk files as quick links.

Hmm, looks like it isn't an update.

That's right... My Windows 10 is now syncing all my desktop icons to one drive. The file types have shifted too—no longer .lnk, now .url. Updated: Steam icons are .url, everything else remains .lnk as before, sorry. What a surprise!

It seems like the fix came from something unrelated to my desktop. Previously, my SSD reached its limits and slowed down significantly, especially when updating icons. My operating system was handling a huge number of file connections, which made things worse. This time, it appears the update for OneDrive resolved the issue. I didn’t use OneDrive recently, and I’m pretty sure it updated itself automatically. The update happened just two hours ago, but I only noticed it about ten minutes later.

Well, if there is anyone out there who can give me a little scare from time to time, it would be MS. I'll need to figure out if I can see onedrive traffic somewhere, I only synch my skyrim saves, and music, though that doesn't seem to be working. 2+ GB of music and OD is using ~300MB.

It's possible your antivirus checked the shortcuts and came back clean. The green confirmation suggests no threats were detected.

It seemed like a typical action an antivirus might take.
