Hello everyone, welcome! I'm just starting out here and hope my first message helps someone with a similar question. I recently turned on my Asus Gl503GE laptop after being away from home for a week. As expected, there were several updates released this month during Patch Tuesday. After installing the update, I restarted and checked again—then a strange firmware update appeared and began downloading. It was labeled as coming from Asustek (see attached images). I received another restart prompt and after clicking it, my laptop booted into the UEFI BIOS and started the update process. I was puzzled because this was the first time something like this happened. I had thought firmware updates were only for surface devices, but now I see Windows Update can also provide BIOS firmware for third-party OEMs such as Asus. I initially suspected a virus or attack, but after checking the Asus website and running a scan with Bitdefender, I didn’t find any malware. Is this a new feature in Windows Update? Have others experienced this? Thanks for your help!

MSI has it too. I’d recommend not updating the BIOS unless there are any problems.

Hi, thank you for your message. I didn’t expect a bios update notification. I thought it was just a driver patch but was surprised when ezflash launched and began updating the BIOS. It seems this might be a new Windows update capability. I checked Google, but didn’t find any relevant articles about it.

It's possible a critical issue exists in the BIOS, which may require an update. I'm not sure for certain.

It might be linked to the Zombieload vulnerability; ensure all devices are patched.

That seems reasonable. The main point is the signature dates from 2018, which is unusual. It’s likely the private disclosure happened back then, and the correction was part of Microsoft’s testing. The update might have been released alongside other fixes once the exploits became public.

Subscribed to all notifications. Covering other Microsoft items too. This seems linked to the Zombieload patch mentioned by Curious Pineapple. Updated on May 15, 2019 by Kindachris. Spelling adjusted.

Came across this yesterday. Turns out there is a legit mechanism for Uefi updates via windows update. So Oems like Asus are now able to update firmware of the Uefi Bios directly from Windows Update instead of us having to manually flash it via a pendrive. Hope this helps anyone else who has the same moment of panic and confusion I did Links to new update mechanism from Microsoft: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows...e-platform https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows...ows-update
