Windows 10 update issue with no sound.
Windows 10 update issue with no sound.
Hello, I'm trying to upgrade to Windows 10 but after a short time I noticed my sound stopped working. Nothing is muted and my headphones function on other devices. I reinstalled the drivers for Speakers and Realtek High Definition Audio in Device Manager, but it didn't work. I also ran the Windows troubleshooter without finding any errors. In Playback Devices, the speakers device is selected, yet pressing the test button gives an error saying 'Failed to play test tone.' I'm not sure what's causing this issue and think it might be related to the OS update. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!
The update was applied using the media creation tool, yet your reservation was already set. Could this discrepancy be the cause?
you were still waiting probbbly for compatibility i forced it because im ballasy and know how to use google im on realtek and no issues uninstall with delete option and reboot
basically just visit the manufacturer's website for your motherboard (probably onboard sound). then navigate to Driver Downloads—each site varies but you’ll find what you need. download the audio driver again. if available, pick Windows 10; otherwise go with Windows 8.1. after downloading and installing, your sound should function properly.
I’m sharing some observations from my experience. When I first booted up my PC, I noticed only the "left speaker - right speaker" test in my university software (STX II) was active, while everything else remained silent. The Windows sound test even triggered an error instead of normal silence. After a restart, the issue resolved, but I discovered a more straightforward fix: opening Services, navigating to Windows Audio, and restarting via the right-click menu. This approach seems to work for both internal and external sound cards, and it’s likely Windows 10 is the root cause here.
The issue likely stems from missing native drivers for your sound device. While Windows 10's driver base is rooted in Windows 7 and 8, newer versions can still encounter occasional problems. It might also be a software bug. Have you already shared this problem with the manufacturer?
