Windows 10 Start Menu
Windows 10 Start Menu
Hello! I recently switched from Windows 7 to Windows 10 about two weeks ago. I skipped Windows 8 because of the Start Screen with tiles. It's true that Microsoft has reinstated the Start Menu, but it doesn't quite match what I preferred. I actually like the layout—especially the right side with tiles and the left side with the traditional menu. My main issue is that I can't pin items to the left side. I don’t want to see the newly added sections, and I prefer having my own shortcuts for frequently used apps. I’ve tried ClassicShell and Start10, but both completely revert the Start Menu to look like Windows 7 and remove the tiles, which isn’t ideal. Do you know any alternative programs that keep the appearance unchanged and let me place shortcuts on the left side? Thanks for your help, and sorry for my unclear English. (As you can see from the picture below, I’m from Hungary)
This has become quite common for me in the Start menu. Jump lists of my pinned programs have been super helpful—like when Notepad was pinned, the arrow let me open notes instantly without searching Explorer. Pinning VLC made playlists accessible with just a Windows key press and mouse hover. Now I struggle to pin them left, and right pins only show tiles without much utility. It’s slowing me down when I need quick access or want to avoid creating too many shortcuts on the desktop. Thanks for the advice, especially since these apps change how I start my day.
You might have considered a different start menu option instead of skipping 8. To clarify, yes, you can pin items to the start menu, though it’s tied to a specific tile on the right. You could simply upgrade to Start 10, as there’s really no need to open those tile apps. I don’t use the start menu much, so I keep my favorite programs on the taskbar and treat it more like a dock.
Currently there aren't many helpful widgets, but I really like the email notification and weather updates. I hope more useful options appear later. I don't mind clicking much, but it gives me useful info right away when I open the Start menu—something similar to Android widgets. I’d prefer to keep the right side unchanged and just tweak the left side, since I don’t like too many icons on my desktop or any items in the taskbar. Usually I have many open windows, and a full taskbar makes it hard to handle them comfortably.
I don't believe shortcuts are suitable for that location. You might want to place it directly here instead.
I’d like the choice for a metro-themed option. Hope you both do too.
The feature isn't available in the RTM version 10 build. It was present in earlier releases but was removed due to feedback from Microsoft and some insiders. You can't simply remove it, but you can pin items as tiles, unpin them, and adjust the list accordingly.
