Windows 10 sleep and hibernation issues are occurring (volmgr Error 45 & 46)
Yesterday my computer stopped entering sleep or hibernation mode and now it just switches to the log-in screen before turning off, but the machine remains powered on. This issue hasn't occurred before. Checking the event log reveals errors with IDs 45 and sometimes 46. I've spent several hours trying to fix it, yet nothing has worked. The first time this happened, I installed the Windows update KB5003637, so it might have triggered the problem. (This was the only major change to my system, and it coincided with the day I first noticed the issue.) I removed that update, but the error persists. Installing all new Windows updates didn't resolve it. (Note: I mistakenly thought KB5003254 was the update, but I don't recall installing it before the error.) Recently, I added drivers for Nvidia and a webcam, reinstalling both just to confirm it didn't help. I also tried using a bootable Windows installation to repair the system, but it reported "Windows can't be repaired" without further details. There was also unusual behavior where some USB devices disconnected and reconnected randomly yesterday, which might be connected to the problem. I'm running out of ideas and hope someone can help. Edit: I realized the correct update was KB5003254, not KB5003637, so I deleted the wrong version and plan to remove this update as well to see if it fixes things, but I can't locate it in the uninstall list.)
It's true that reinstalling often helps resolve issues, but I'm trying to prevent this whenever I can. It seems like a reasonable approach now.
I finally figured it out. The issue started worsening, and I couldn't install the latest updates. I had to take action. Ultimately, I resolved it by performing a clean reinstall—probably a refresh install—and made a backup of my data just in case. I followed the provided guide, which worked perfectly. After this, I've been using my PC for two days, and everything appears normal again. The newest Windows update is also now installed.
