Windows 10 setup feels extremely frustrating
Every MSDAA, Dreamspark Premium or Microsoft Imagine license is an OEM product. Specifically, System Builder OEM licenses. This means they're designed for individuals constructing and selling computers. Absolutely, even if you were a student, the terms remain consistent. In fact, you've also consented that upon completing your studies or ending your enrollment, you'll need to buy a new license for the software you wish to keep using.
I have no doubts and you understand the topic. Yet I distinctly recall verifying my Windows version and realizing it wasn't the original manufacturer's release. I don't know why, perhaps my memory is unclear or something changed when upgrading from Windows 7 to 10? Still, I clearly remember seeing OEM screenshots in the article and confirming it myself by comparing both versions, knowing my version wasn't OEM—and I'm really pleased about it! Maybe I'm just being overly confident, but honestly?
Could I have connected my Windows license to my Microsoft account if it had been an OEM product? It turns out it wasn't, and before the upgrade it wasn't either. According to the Win10 FAQ, that’s why I’m unsure how to transfer my W7 license from Dreamspark Premium—it likely wasn’t OEM at all. My W10 license is retail, so I just need to figure out the next steps.
@GoodBytes Oooooook, so I originally checked by running "slmgr -dli", which told me "retail". I found instructions there https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/4958...olume.html . That's why I've been saying I have a retail version. Now I've just re-assembled my old rig, installed a fresh windows 10 and run that command again after finding out that it also had reactivated. It still said "retail". I edited the post above, and wondered why it still didn't work after doing all this : And now I just happen upon this comment : You were right. The windows 7 version that I bought got for free was OEM. Then I upgraded to windows 10, and this command tells me I have a retail version. But I don't ... not really. The question is now ... do I need to buy a retail license, or due to the apparently, according to the comment, blurry boundary, can I re-use it some way ? At least we got to the bottom of it. That wouldn't have been possible without the doubt you placed in me GoodBytes, so thanks a lot ! I was wrong, you've got my apologies. Update : tried customer support again, they still ask for a windows 7 key and say they can't do anything. Guess I've got no other option than buy a retail windows 10 key.
