I have an installation of Windows 10 that seems to ignore update notifications. This situation has persisted for some time now. Although I value not having frequent reminders about updates, I'm concerned about potential security vulnerabilities that remain unpatched. If I check manually, it often indicates I'm up to date, but previous updates appear to focus only on Windows Defender rather than the operating system itself. It looks like my version 1903 and build 18362.1256 might be outdated. Could Microsoft have blocked me from receiving updates because they suspect my license is invalid? I originally had a license for my laptop on my desktop, which might explain this issue. Even though it's still active, I'm hesitant to purchase a new one just in case. Additionally, my virtual machine—where I never entered any keys—continues to nag about updates, raising questions about why Microsoft would treat me differently than someone without a license at all. Has anyone else encountered this problem before? It’s possible the issue isn’t linked to the license at all.

Your device will begin operating at 2 a.m. to apply the latest updates without your input. You’ll find the Windows update log on the same screen where you review updates, allowing you to verify whether the changes were successfully installed.

Thank you for your reply! I understand that leaving the computer on overnight isn't a solution. I checked the update log, and it only displays updates for Windows Defender.

It seems Windows is configured to run on a long-term support branch. I recall adjusting it via gpedit.msc. There are options in administrative templates under Windows Update where you can select your preferred update cycle and other settings.

Sorry for the delay, I faced other challenges in my life that caused me to overlook this issue. Finally, it worked! I used the tool Kilrah shared. It initially warned me updates aren't allowed because Windows mistakenly thought it was installed on a USB drive. That wasn’t true, so I followed the registry instructions from the link provided: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/wind...8d2683fc37. I’m not sure how it happened, but after doing that step I managed to update successfully. This post is for anyone facing the same problem who might search online for help.

It's completely reasonable to expect a few months or half a year. However, it will likely return with full force and almost certainly render the installation nearly impossible to use. It tends to push out countless updates all at once when it does.
