Windows 10 Secret Files/Assistance?
Hi everyone, I encountered a similar problem with a friend’s Windows 10 setup. The MBR table got wiped, so I tried rebuilding it using sfc / chckdsk but kept seeing errors about no windows installs. He opted to reinstall Windows 10 over his existing files instead of reformatting. Now, inside the new installation, his old files are missing. I disabled hidden attributes, checked Disk Management for extra partitions (none found), and noticed his 250GB SSD shows only 72GB free—suggesting something is stored there. I reviewed the Windows 10 system storage breakdown, which listed a 102GB 'other' folder. How can I locate those unknown files? Thanks!
You’d need to locate a Windows Old folder in your system storage, similar to how I did. It should appear when hidden attributes are enabled. The name should be Windows.old, and you currently have two of them. Be careful with updates as they can affect the files.
Would these missing 102GB refer only to files like documents, videos, and pictures, or could it also include programs? If programs are missing too, some items might appear in %Appdata% and other locations. It seems unusual that the entire Windows.old folder is accounting for just 32GB out of the 102GB, as it appears to store everything based on past experiences.
Did Multiplayer explore the entire directory or only glanced at system and program files? They don’t display everything unless you navigate to the user folder and desktop. A few items might be absent, while others are just compressed.
To get some outside assistance, consider setting up Team Viewer. If you need help, I can forward details to someone on Discord in my personal channel. Keep in mind that Team Viewer gives me access to your computer, but you can disconnect whenever you like.
