Hey there! It sounds like your mom's netbook is struggling with the new Windows 10 installation. Even though Win10 is designed to work on older devices, compatibility issues can arise. The slow performance you're experiencing—especially with folder openings taking ages—might be due to outdated drivers, insufficient RAM, or the netbook's limited hardware. Have you checked for any driver updates or considered upgrading the device?

It was a while since the last update, and it's taking some time to organize everything fully.

I'm facing the same issue. Switching my parents' laptop from Windows 7 to 10 caused it to become extremely slow. Even basic functions like opening the start menu are taking a long time. I upgraded yesterday, but it still ran smoothly on Windows 7. The machine has an Intel Core i5-460M, 6GB RAM, and a 750GB HDD.

Perform a fresh installation instead of an upgrade. Also, make sure to install your drivers.

Upgrading relies on the condition of the prior setup. As mentioned earlier, it could take some time to catalog all folders and understand your device. Even though it functioned well on Windows 7/8.1, that doesn’t guarantee malware or nuisance software are still present, consuming resources and hindering performance in various ways. I suggest starting fresh if you can’t resolve the problems otherwise.

Sure thing! Thanks for reaching out. I understand a fresh setup would be ideal, but it isn’t exactly practical right now... perhaps we can revisit it later. The laptop runs Intel Atom with 2GB RAM—those specs are quite limited. Even though they’re low, it performed smoothly on Windows 8.1, so there must be another factor at play. Could be the system is just needing time to fully index everything.
