Windows 10 repeatedly prompts me to exit full-screen.
I recently reinstalled Windows about a month ago and a week later it kept randomly closing me out of a full-screen game. After hours of play, it would exit once and then repeat in 20-30 seconds. This also occurred while watching long YouTube videos in full-screen, though the taskbar would appear and then switch back after a short delay. When nothing was open except the Desktop, I tried disabling "OfficeBackgroundTaskHandlerRegistration" but couldn't locate it in Task Scheduler. The issue isn’t related to keybindings—only my mouse has them and nothing is set to switch windows. This is frustrating during competitive gaming sessions where you’re caught off guard. EDIT: It didn’t happen with VLC Media Player or a full movie. I suspect the problem is specific to YouTube and Overwatch in full-screen mode, especially after playing for about two hours. EDIT 2: Happened in a Steam game, only after an hour of play. It occurred once I paused and then switched back to Desktop when I went to the bathroom.
This happens because certain processes open popup windows and they get priority. You might use a window manager with a hotkey to force focus, keeping the window centered until you close it manually. DisplayFusions doesn't work well with OW, likely due to Blizzard's coding habits. A simple workaround is to turn off all popups in software or run games in windowed mode without borders. I noticed this problem is more common on Windows 10 than my older Windows 7, since OW was the first game with big popup issues. Others, like YouTube, just display popups over the video.
Determine the source of the popup issues and adjust the settings accordingly. On Windows 10, this involves managing notifications from the tray (though its exact name isn’t clear). It also affects caps lock OSD and similar features. To keep email popups working, opt for a borderless windowed interface.
It seems unclear what's triggering the issue. I might need to test a different approach.
Navigate to settings, notifications, and actions, disable everything, then proceed with the apps that will interrupt games and YouTube. It was really frustrating at first, but I identified the issue. Hope it works for you.
Attempted a solution but results remain unchanged. Running the game in full-screen still causes exits. Borderless window mode helped slightly, though it doesn’t stop the exit entirely—it only shows the cursor and the game stops responding, but I can still play by clicking anywhere.
Running additional titles on Steam keeps everything current. Yesterday I tried Seasons After Fall and noticed it lacks a Borderless window setting, so I used full-screen mode. After roughly half an hour it pushed me to the desktop since no other windows were active at that moment.
