I don't have specific details about the upgrade process you're referring to. However, generally speaking, upgrading Windows 8.1 Pro to Windows 10 may affect your existing installation. Your reserve copy might be impacted depending on how the upgrade is handled—some users retain their original setup while others switch entirely. For precise information, check Microsoft's official documentation or contact their support.

Microsoft has just shared that all Windows 10 insiders can access the fully released version. However, they’ll also receive beta updates before the general public, which might have some issues. This is similar to the Steam beta option where you choose to get new features but could encounter bugs. The main change here is that opting into a Windows 10 preview means you must install these updates, and the only way to skip them is by purchasing a new Windows 10 copy. In short: yes, you’ll get the full update, but you’ll be stuck with beta versions forever as a tester.

Thanks, but I think I'll hold off for now—it's just strange how it appeared.

Have you joined the insider program? It looks like you shouldn’t be receiving the insider build via Windows Update.

Microsoft informed insiders that upgrading from Windows 7 or 8 to Windows 10 Tech preview keeps you eligible for a full upgrade. You also have the option to disable beta updates after Windows 10 launches, allowing you to switch your Windows 7 or 8 to Win10 Beta and maintain stable Windows 10 by the end of July—unless you choose to run a genuine version.
