I received an old 2009 MacBook, and the previous owner removed the hard drive so I replaced it with a new one. Since I don’t have a copy of OS X, I’m asking if it’s feasible to install Windows 10 instead. I have a USB with the Windows installation media, but when I try to use it, it shows an error code 0xc00000f and restarts shortly after. Now I’m stuck with the Mac, any advice would be helpful?

Consider setting up an Apple account, then obtain the ISO file, or look it up using a Google search.

Could be the case I might end up doing that.

Mac lacks built-in BIOS features, so you must use Boot Camp via OSX to install Windows 10. After installation, you can configure it as the primary boot choice. You could also visit an Apple store and have them install OS X on your Mac for a quicker setup. If you have someone with a Mac, they can download the OS onto their device to get it instead.

It would cost a reasonable amount, considering the distance and the need to visit the store before heading out.

I’m uncertain if contacting Apple technical support is the right choice.

Hey, If Im not mistaken then your iMac might be able to do internet recovery: when turning on hold down cmnd + option + r It should install whatever os it was shipped with... but it would probably be very old... and then updating... Otherwise, a better solution is to download and make a bootable installer usb on another pc: 1. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMac_(Inte...ibody_iMac <- find your model, and check the latest compatible OS 2. google how to make a bootable usb with it Installation itself should be very straight forward, (did the same with 2 2009 MBPs) Then do the bootcamp/windows install. However, if I remember correctly, you would have to do some EXTRA work to make win10 work with older macs...

Internet Recovery is unlikely to function on a 2009 iMac since it was released afterward. You might still obtain a DMG. There are likely torrents available from trustworthy sources with the OS X Installer files.

I've chosen to purchase a Snow Leopard install disk from Apple. Thanks to everyone for your support!
