I don't understand how you formed that belief. My laptop has always worked perfectly for my college tasks, I haven't faced any problems. I use different browsers and applications, and everything runs smoothly without memory issues.

SSD? You're right about swapping data between the drive and RAM. With 1.7GB/1.9GB, the RAM stays empty even when virtual machines run. With an HDD, you'll see a big slowdown because of that RAM usage. (That's what I've experienced.)

It would work if I turned on virtual memory first; just make sure you avoid using the kind of garbage Google Chrome uses.
