Windows 10 New PC – unusual freezes (likely due to NZXT CAM)
Hello, I've set up a new computer and everything seems to be working fine so far. Performance is acceptable. However, after prolonged use—about 30 to 120 minutes—the system starts acting oddly. The issues are:
- Windows occasionally freezes, though I can still move the mouse, drag windows, and close applications. The closed app icons remain visible in the taskbar.
- YouTube videos stop playing.
- When I open Task Manager, I can't interact with it; I can't log off or shut down, so I always have to use the power button for a hard shutdown.
- I've tried running some stress tests (Blender, Prime95, 3D Mark, Timespy, Shadow of the Tomb Raider) and a memory test from Windows.
I suspect potential problems with WiFi and switched to Ethernet. I also checked iSCSI and turned it off, but that didn't help. I removed NZXT CAM, uninstalled it, ran a Windows repair, and reinstalled the OS—still no improvement.
Currently, I'm testing with updated drivers (except for AMD), but nothing seems to resolve the problem. I've also tried running Linux to determine if the issue is hardware or software-related.
Additional observations:
- No overclocking; only XMP profile for RAM.
- Temperatures are normal (CPU and GPU below 50°C).
- No gaming yet, so it's not frustrating from a performance standpoint.
Any suggestions? If this doesn't work, I might try using Linux to see what's causing the problem.
It looks like the update didn't fix the problem. I changed the operating system to SSD from Intel to a faster Samsung drive, reinstalled Windows from scratch. Some basic drivers like Edge Chromium, Notepad++, battle.net, and Steam came through. I also turned iSCSI drives back on after a long gaming session. Still no issues so far—another three hours of gaming. It seems another app or software might be causing the freeze. My top guess is NZXT CAM; I'll check it out.
After a weekend of testing without NZXT CAM, no issues arose. This morning, when I launched it again in the system tray, the first freeze happened. Now I’m 90% confident the software is responsible. It’s disappointing because without it, the disk temperatures wouldn’t update properly. I plan to share a GIF and check what support NZXT offers, though I doubt they’ll act unless more complaints come in.
Hello, I've faced the same issue for two weeks—Windows freezes. For five days without NZXT CAM, my PC ran smoothly. It's frustrating not being able to control RGB or fans. I found this information while searching online and reached out to NZXT support last Friday. P.S. Grüße aus München
I tested the latest beta of CAM (4.10.0) and was confident it fixed the issue. I didn’t experience freezing for two days. However, it happened again later. Looking back, I probably spent more than four to five hours on the computer over those two days. It’s reassuring to know others face similar problems. Grüße aus Köln
I'm facing the same problem you mentioned. My PC shuts down unexpectedly, I can move the mouse but eventually it won't respond. I have to turn it off manually. I believe the issue might be with the NZXT cam. I removed Icue and Dragon Center to rule them out, but the freezes still happen. I'm unsure what to do now. After reading these posts, I don't think my hardware is the problem because I play games smoothly except for these strange stops. My PC was built about three months ago, and I'm really disappointed. I plan to start Cam every time I boot up so I can save my RGB settings and then exit quickly. This way I hope it will stop those annoying interruptions.
I just completed assembling my PC and experienced the same issue right away. At first, I thought it was due to overclocking the CPU or incorrect XMP profiles, so I reset all BIOS settings. But then the strange freeze returned, and I realized it always occurs when the nzxt cam starts in the background. I uninstalled it today after noticing many users report similar problems that can crash the whole system.
