Windows 10 is affecting my Subnautica game. Is it safe to continue using Windows 7?
No, W7 compatibility mode isn't limited to apps that fail to launch; it's frequently utilized and has proven effective in various games. It's important to confirm if you upgraded from W10 or performed a fresh installation, as these factors can significantly impact performance.
It was a new setup, and I added an extra SSD to support both gaming (WD) and regular use (V-series). I used my Sata 2 port for the HDD since there are only two Sata 3s available. A different Acronis version that came with the WD Blue SSD caused confusion due to its unusual interface, leading to non-boots and increasing frustration—though Windows 7 still worked fine. Now that I’ve resolved the Acronis issue, restoring either OS on the gaming SSD is straightforward, requiring only a change from 7 to 10. On the W10, the extra stuttering appears as erratic movement, which seems smoother compared to what I experienced on Windows 7. I’m open to sharing a side-by-side recording via my camcorder if you’re interested, using the same file and path for consistency. I’ve noticed the difference every time, though it’s still playable. It would be disappointing to skip W10 for gaming, especially with the volume bar in games. I’m not sure if my motherboard or RAM is the problem—my BIOS is from 2015! Thank you.
Have you attempted turning off the Steam overlay and also the Game Bar in Windows 10? Additionally, if you encounter any unknown overlays, consider disabling startups one by one to identify potential conflicts from third-party software.
Yes, I turned off the Steam overlay last night and the game bar days before. Only a few programs are launching now, but something is missing in my Win7 system—specifically the "Security health systray." I’ve been thinking about Windows Defender and have turned off the antivirus, yet nothing changed. The firewall remains active. The volume bar still appears (which I actually prefer), so it might be interfering with things. It seems connected to browsers, which was unusual. Please don’t rush in answering me, as this isn’t urgent for me right now, but I’d appreciate any tips on getting W10 to work like W7.
I was assuming W10 had this program active, which could be an issue. It isn’t listed among the startups on W7, and these programs are also running together. Are there any W7 extended support updates available? I want to stay safe while using W7 for Steam and a browser.
I’ve spent considerable time checking forums for solutions, but it’s still unclear. Maybe the DX12 addition is causing the problem. I shouldn’t be guessing based on limited knowledge!
I’m willing to try any experiments you suggest might help.
Also, I’ll prepare a video in a few days if needed.
Thanks
P.S., CCleaner says I have many outdated drivers, and W update offers some optional downloads. I’m not sure about installing multiple drivers.
It's referred to as W7 ESU (Extended Security Updates), aimed at IT Professionals. It seems you need to purchase it, though I'm unsure if proof of IT expertise is required. The update will only be available for three years, meaning support will last just over ten months.
There was a performance issue with Windows 10 where an old GPU driver would automatically install, causing problems when switching to a newer version. To fix this, download the AMD driver in advance, use DDU to remove the video driver, restart after removal, then reinstall the new driver and reconnect to the internet.
Sorry for the delay.
Just wanted to say thank you for your response. I was curious if updating the auto display driver from Windows Update was causing problems, but it didn’t.
I think it’s best to wrap up this task now. My plan is to stick with Windows 7 for gaming until winter, after which I’ll replace my motherboard, RAM, CPU, and GPU. Once that’s done, I’ll be able to try Subnautica again and hopefully fix the issue (I haven’t tried Below Zero yet.)
If I choose to reinstall Windows 10, what should I disable or uninstall to clean up and optimize it for gaming?
Cheers.
