Windows 10 is affecting my Subnautica game. Is it safe to continue using Windows 7?
I appreciate everyone's support for those facing difficulties. I reached out as a final option since I’m running out of ideas. Most of my hardware is quite outdated, and upgrades won’t be possible until autumn. I’ve been using Windows 7 for a long time, and learning that only about 4% of Steam gamers use it made me decide to upgrade. My current game is Subnautica, which runs well, but after trying to adjust Windows 10 settings, the performance dropped significantly. It’s clear Windows 7 doesn’t handle the game smoothly—this isn’t just my perception. Batman Arkham Night seemed to run better, though I haven’t tested it extensively. My BIOS is up-to-date, and I’ve tried all available AMD drivers. Here are my specifications: Win 10 version 21H2, Gigabyte GA H81M DS2V, R9 280x, i7 4790, Corsair TX650M, 12GB RAM, WD Blue SSD.
I’m unsure why Windows 10, after following all the “tweaking” instructions, starts causing issues with my graphics card. Should I stick with Windows 7 until the end of the year, or is it possible to get Windows 10 to work better? I’m curious about how many processes might need to be disabled before things stabilize.
Thank you very much for any help you can provide.
On my most recently retired machine (about two months ago), i7-4790k, 32GB RAM, RX580 GPU... there were no performance problems with Windows 10 compared to any earlier versions. Be extremely cautious with these so-called 'tweak' sites and steps. They are often incorrect and can actually lower performance. Your issues probably aren't just related to "Windows 10".
I agree with USARet, Win 10 seems unlikely to be the issue. Also, tweak/driver optimising sites are likely to introduce adware, bloatware, spyware, or junkware, so I would never use them as they could run in the background in a harmful way.
Anyway, according to UserBenchMark your system is operating normally for its age and specifications. It's a solid benchmark for the same specs in the community, and your setup is aging well.
Perhaps check other factors like GPU and CPU temperatures during heavy use—could the case be overheating? Is there dust accumulating in the heatsinks or filters that might cause heat buildup during long gaming sessions?
Are you attempting to play at resolutions and settings higher than what your R9 280X supports?
Thanks guys for replying,
The "tweaking" was just disabling this and that including disabling the HPET in boot-time comand. General optimisation.
All that is changing here is the OS. I have read that Windows 10 leads to better framerate on modern hardware, where as those who have old hardware will have the opposite result. My mobo and graphics are well outdated now.
I had a headache installing Win 10 to two drives, and ended up with non-bootable drives at one point forcing me to reinstall, so I think I am done with it now. I will use Win 10 for everyday stuff, and Win 7 for gaming and try to limit my internet use.
If windows 10 uses more resources than 7, then that would be a plausible explanation. As I use a gamepad, I notice dropped frames more than somone who plays with a mouse. I don't like Win 10 much it has to be said. Bit of an anti-climax really.
W10 requires more system RAM because of its extensive telemetry capabilities, but once turned off it shouldn't be significantly worse than W7. In most cases, if you understand how to configure it, W10 shouldn't be an issue—unless there was an improper installation, such as during an upgrade instead of a clean install.
Thanks for your feedback. I’ll give it another shot with this program. It seems I’m concentrating on just one game, which might mean the focus is more on that title than on Win10 itself. The Subnautica team has released a beta version over the past couple of years, bringing notable updates but also more bugs, so could the stable release perform better in Windows 10 because it wasn’t designed for it? The Experimental build keeps working smoothly, though I didn’t want to commit to it.
Windows 10 came with many issues that were frustrating, and I found the update process less manageable. I’m still getting used to it.
I’ll keep experimenting but need a pause after dealing with the installation problems. (The boot-time repair was completely pointless. Anyone else have had similar experiences?)
Cheers.
It might be due to compatibility issues between the game and W10. Have you attempted using W7 compatibility mode on W10?
Yes, someone suggested it to me a few days ago. I believe it applies to applications that don't start up. My reasoning is that with direct comparison, less RAM results in slower performance. I plan to try the telemetry processes you mentioned and will update you.
UPDATE: OMO-Shutup10 didn't make a difference, even with the recommended adjustments. I'm downloading other games to check if this performance issue is specific to Subnautica.
