Windows 10 fails to start properly.
Windows 10 fails to start properly.
Windows 10 setup seems problematic lately. Recently upgraded hardware and followed troubleshooting steps, but activation still isn’t working properly. The desktop overlay appears even though the background remains unchanged. During activation, Windows indicates it doesn’t recognize a valid copy of the software. I found a guide suggesting using the Troubleshooter, which I tried. After clicking “I changed hardware,” I logged in to Skype and waited but didn’t see improvement. Then I re-entered my product key, but the issue persisted. I’m unsure if I’m stuck or need further assistance. Thanks for your help!
Access your Microsoft account. You might need to purchase a new product key (like on /r/microsoftwareswap) when upgrading your motherboard—such as moving from Z97 to Z270, or from Z87 to Z97.
I don’t understand. The advantage of doubt is to verify before engaging with the activation servers.
Contact Microsoft to clarify your issue. After upgrading from Windows 7, my license also became invalid. I reached out to them, and after some transfers, they listened and provided a replacement key. It seems this might be a common solution, though it’s not clear if it’s the standard procedure.
Windows operates normally without issues. There appear to be no bugs detected. It looks like you obtained an OEM license for Windows, which restricts transfer between systems. The system locks itself to the motherboard during initial installation or activation. Retail licenses can be transferred, but this usually requires additional cost and support. Since you upgraded your motherboard, you’ll need a new Windows license for the change.
