I've observed my PC occasionally freezing for a brief moment over the past few months. It's most apparent while watching videos, where the video stutters briefly while audio stays normal. After installing Bitsum's project lasso, I identified explorer.exe as the likely cause, which occasionally spikes CPU usage and leads to lag. Recently, I upgraded my hardware—CPU, RAM, motherboard—and the issue persists, suggesting a Windows 10 issue. I'm seeking advice to resolve this frustrating problem.

No, you haven't reinstalled Windows following the upgrade.

I didn't reinstall Windows after the upgrade, and the issue has existed before the upgrade too.

Have you performed any virus scans? It might be wise to reinstall Windows.

Avast isn't finding anything, and you prefer to keep your files safe without reinstalling Windows. Look for other options or updates.

I might consider using tools like Malwarebytes for scanning. Generally, when I modify PC components such as the CPU, motherboard, or RAM, I encounter similar Windows issues even before upgrading. It’s hard to pinpoint a specific cause for Explorer-related problems, except possibly malware. You could also try clearing out unnecessary files and ensure your SSD has at least 20-30GB of available space.

I'll attempt using Malwarebytes. Do you have roughly 80 GB available on your SSD? Are there any options to reinstall Windows without risking data loss?

The Windows Installer offers a feature that retains certain files, though I haven’t tested it and likely won’t use it. It’s usually preferable to perform a fresh installation instead. Would you like me to suggest how to copy files to an external drive?

It's good to note that Malwarebytes didn't detect any significant issues. Installing Windows on your SSD shouldn't affect the files stored on your HDD.
