Windows 10 encryption
Windows 10 encryption
I just encrypted a folder using the built-in tool. The lock icon appears now, but I can still read its contents. Since this is on my home computer and I’m the only user, it logs me in automatically without a password. Would this level of encryption protect it from external hackers? I’m fine with people accessing the file, but I don’t want anyone else to get in. Also, was it normal not to need a password during setup?
Create a new non-admin user and verify visibility of the folder.
The Windows 10 encryption is (afaik) a mix of your user profile and the operating system installation. This implies that files should remain unreadable if:
- You attempt to access them from another device or installation.
- Another user has logged in.
However, if you're authenticated as your own user and someone else gains access through a backdoor, the encryption becomes largely ineffective.
What I don’t know is: in the latest Windows versions, user profiles are linked to an online account. From past experiences (in W2000/XP), I recall that an encrypted file would remain unreadable even after reinstalling the OS, regardless of the username and password.
If this applies now with an online account, I’m uncertain.
