I've owned an HP Pavilion dv7 for more than two years without any problems, especially since I'm a frequent internet user. Recently, about three days ago, my Action Center suggested restarting it for maintenance to fix drive errors. After several failed attempts, it showed "scanning and repairing drive (cSmile: 0% complete." I tried restarting twice, letting it run for hours each time. Once it reached around 31%, the computer restarted itself and began automatic repairs, displaying a blue screen with troubleshooting options. I clicked "startup repair" for about five hours, but it kept saying it was checking for errors—possibly taking over an hour. I'm really worried because this is my most important laptop, and I'm unsure what to do next. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Keep holding your breath... it might mean your HDD is failing, so I recommend replacing it with a new one once it finishes its current task.

Your hard drive has a 700GB capacity but only 670GB is currently stored. You're worried about losing everything, especially since you don’t have a backup and didn’t expect this to happen.

Your system includes built-in diagnostic tools. Press the escape key when starting up and navigate to diagnostics to perform a test. The drive is labeled as an F8 drive, though I’m not certain about the exact operating system version.

Your 700GB SATA drive holds roughly 670GB of data. Whether you should wait depends on your needs—if you plan to use the remaining space soon, it might be safe. Otherwise, consider backing up important files now.

If the loop persists, self-repair is unlikely. Check HP diagnostic tools to assess hardware, and consider using OS boot media for a restart attempt. Which OS are you running—Windows 7, 8.1, or 10?

Navigate to the failed startup page, then proceed to troubleshooting and refresh. Updating the OS will preserve your files. You’ll only lose applications. If it doesn’t display correctly, press F11 or F8 during startup.
