Windows 10 (code 12) issue - audio interface not detected following CPU upgrade?
Hi everyone.
I’ve won 10 64-bit users and dual booted my system. Both versions are 64-bit. I upgraded the CPU without changing the chipset—it was an Am4 chipset with an AM4 motherboard and a B450 board. I started with an older PCI-E GPU and not the integrated graphics. The new CPU doesn’t have built-in graphics. Both systems use the same PCI-E audio interface (external, powered externally). Everything is working fine in both setups before and after the upgrade.
However, the other system doesn’t recognize the audio interface after the change. It displays a message like “This device cannot find enough free resources (code 12) You will need to disable one of the other devices” in the Device Manager.
I tried uninstalling the built-in audio (both BIOS and Device Manager), reinstalling the latest drivers via Device Manager, and running a USB repair update. The USB repair worked once, but when I shut down and restarted, the interface would disconnect.
I’m not keen on reinstalling the system. The hardware appears unchanged, and both systems have the latest updates. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.
When sharing troubleshooting details, it's important to provide complete system information. List your specifications clearly as follows:
CPU:
CPU cooler:
Motherboard:
RAM:
Storage: SSD/HDD:
GPU:
Power Supply:
Chassis:
Operating System:
Monitor:
Also mention the age of your PSU and the current BIOS version for your motherboard. Include details about audio gear and USB peripherals.
Before upgrading the CPU, confirm you were using the latest BIOS version. After the upgrade, check if a message about fTPM being reset appeared.
Thank you for your message. Here is the revised version:
I appreciate your reply. I also value it.
Processor: Amd Ryzen 7 3700x (switched from Amd Ryzen 3 2200g). No overclocking.
Cooler: Standard Amd cooler.
Motherboard: Asus B450 m-a (bios updated early 2025)
Memory: 32gb DDR4 (2x16gb)
Graphics: ASUS EN210 SILENT/DI/1GD3/V2(LP) (latest drivers compatible with Windows 8)
Storage: 5 drives – 3 SSDs and 2 HDDs
Power supply: Standard older 500 watts PSU
Display: Two monitors, Lenovo-Hp brand
Audio interface: Rme Digiface HDSP (connected via older PCIe adapter – external power supply needed)
USB devices: Basic keyboard and mouse (other peripherals connected only when required)
I have updated the BIOS to a version newer than the CPU age (2019). The CPU is fully compatible.
The first screen issue was possibly a Ftpm reset and a request for a change, but I declined (per my memory).
There is a BIOS setting for Ftpm and similar software; I attempted it, but since two similar systems share the hardware, one works perfectly while the other has issues.
