Windows 10 black screen issue - sound remains active
Over the recent weeks my computer frequently freezes during gaming sessions. Audio remains intact, and I can still communicate with friends via Discord despite the black screen. Restarting resolves the problem, though it causes crashes approximately every thirty minutes. In the Event Viewer, the crash appears linked to event ID 14 from the source nvlddmkm. It suggests either the relevant component isn’t installed or the installation is damaged. You may need to install or repair that component locally. If the issue started on another machine, ensure the display data was saved with the event.
The log entries included were:
- Device Video5
- CMDre 0000004c 00003ffc ffffffff 00000007 ffffffff
- Message resource present but message missing in table
This error has appeared only a few times; the only recurring message is from me restarting my PC after the black screen. I’m reviewing all steps I’ve taken to resolve this.
Potential fixes tried:
- Removing and reinstalling GPU drivers via DDU
- Reinstalling graphics drivers with CTRL-WIN-SHIFT-B
- Reducing GPU speed to 500 MHz
- Running Windows Memory Diagnostic
- Installing RAM one at a time, swapping the two present
- Deleting ASUS Armory crate and related components
- Updating BIOS to the latest version
- Adjusting power management settings in NVIDIA control panel to maximum
There may be additional factors, but this problem has persisted for over a month. I suspect my GPU might be the cause, though I prefer not to replace it. Below are my PC specifications:
Processor: AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 12-Core Processor, 3701 MHz, 12 Core(s), 24 Logical Processor(s)
BaseBoard Product: ROG STRIX B550-E GAMING
ASUS KO RTX 3070 GAMING OC
VENGEANCE RGB PRO SL 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 DRAM 3600MHz C18 Memory Kit
Seasonic FOCUS Plus 1000 Gold
Please let me know if you need further assistance. Thank you.
I think I’m facing the same problem again. I’ve shared a discussion about it too. If I receive a response or resolve it, I’ll revisit this message.
