You likely won’t need to manually activate Windows after the free upgrade. The system should handle it automatically. For backing up your HDD, placing both drives in and booting from Ubuntu is a solid approach—copy everything over to the new drive as a reliable backup.

I created a duplicate of my HDD earlier, but I don’t recall the software used. I’ll attempt to reach out regarding this.

Use the provided backup tool to generate a system image. No, you don’t need to turn on Windows 10—it should already be active after the upgrade finishes.

CloneZilla is available for download. It's derived from Debian and functions effectively across Windows, Linux, and Mac OSX platforms.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm still using W7, just following your suggestions.

Using GWX means you don't have to enable it when working with an ISO.

Upgrading with GWX transmits the computer's HWID to Microsoft servers, enabling activation with a standard key. This key is automatically applied during setup if you bypass entering the product key. For a clean installation, you can again omit the product key and proceed with activation. When cloning an HDD, CloneZilla can create a block-level copy.
