Linux, Ubuntu or SteamOS are the choices. I lean toward Ubuntu since I’ve used it before—it looks nice and tidy. I think @ dalekphalm is right; you should consider Windows too.

SteamOS runs on Linux, mainly based on Debian. It functions more like a console experience rather than a full desktop environment. It’s optimized for gaming, not general computing. You can install Steam on any Debian-based system such as Ubuntu or Linux Mint. Keep in mind it’s still in beta and may have some limitations.
