You're curious about what happens when upgrading from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. It won't feel like getting a new PC—your files will be backed up, and your desktop should remain mostly the same. Thanks for asking!

Apologies, I mistakenly entered 'w' instead of the intended word.

All your documents will be securely stored. There’s nothing to lose, and you won’t miss anything important.

It preserves not just your files but also all your modern applications and WIn32 programs. A few drivers or antivirus tools might still encounter issues. I verified it on my laptop after switching from Windows 8.1 Pro to Windows 10 Technical Preview and it functioned perfectly.

Yes, you should not simply read this page directly. The details about Windows 10 specifications come from Microsoft’s official site, and it’s important to understand the broader upgrade considerations. Upgrading a device depends on more than just meeting system requirements; it involves driver and firmware support, compatibility with applications, and available features. Even if your device doesn’t fully satisfy the minimum Windows 10 specs, certain conditions still apply. If your PC or tablet is running Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 Update, you can verify compatibility using the ‘Check my PC’ feature in the Get Windows 10 app. During the upgrade, apps, files, and settings will transfer, though some may not move correctly. For security tools like anti-virus or anti-malware, Windows checks subscription status and removes your current app while keeping settings intact. Once upgraded, Windows installs the newest version with your prior settings. If your subscription isn’t up to date, the upgrade will activate Windows Defender. Some original manufacturer apps might be removed before the switch. Certain third-party programs will undergo compatibility checks, and you’ll receive alerts about any issues that could block the upgrade. You can opt in or out of affected apps before they’re deleted. Regarding features, if you have older Windows editions, Windows Media Center will be removed. DVD playback will need separate software, and Windows 7 desktop tools will be taken out during installation. Home users get automatic updates, while Pro and Enterprise versions can delay them. Pre-installed games like Solitaire and Minesweeper will be removed during the upgrade. Microsoft has provided updated versions of those games called “Microsoft Solitaire Collection” and “Microsoft Minesweeper.” If you have a USB drive, download the latest drivers from Windows Update or the manufacturer’s site. If Windows Live Essentials is installed, OneDrive will be removed and replaced with the standard OneDrive version.

Upgrading to Windows 10 will move all your programs and files automatically. I suggest removing any antivirus or security software before the upgrade, as some programs may mistakenly detect updates as threats. After switching to Windows 10, reinstall your security software and make sure to back up your data regularly. This helps avoid problems during the process and keeps your system safe.
