You're right, disabling Windows updates isn't always possible. I set my internet to a metered plan so it wouldn't download any new patches. Then I installed updates myself. For feature updates, I usually research them first to understand possible problems or wait until they're nearing the end of life before updating to the latest version.

I'm using 21H2, but many users still run Windows XP, Vista and 7 smoothly. There are ways to turn it off permanently without reactivating the Windows Update Medic service.
