Hey everyone, I’m used to fixing small Windows 10 problems in a shop, but this one’s different. Before 10am I had two laptops and one PC all facing the same issue after updating to Windows 10 1803 'April update'. When I tried to boot, the machine would jump straight to the blue troubleshoot screen after choosing the keyboard language. It either started into the desktop but showed a completely black screen with no icons or background, and drivers were missing—network and audio both had red Xs. The taskbar didn’t respond, and none of the recovery tools worked. Three people are upset because they’re worried about losing their data. Both laptops are UEFI Windows 8 upgrades, while the desktop is a Win 7 upgrade with an old BOIS. It seems the troubleshoot options look similar on all of them, but it might still help to know what to try. Fingers crossed this gets resolved!

It's unusual to see another post with the same problem earlier today. You might want to look through the comments for possible answers. The issue appears consistent across several devices and is being reported by multiple users. Could a specific hardware component or OEM be involved? Checking those details may help identify the cause.

Edit: I noticed you already responded to the previous discussion. I'll keep the link available for anyone else who needs it.

It's quite unusual. Both laptops share the same brand but differ in hardware—desktops are built from scratch while the others use third-party components. There don’t seem to be alternatives, as it looks like everything is failing unexpectedly.

I noticed you shared the same post before. Regarding your question, the computers don’t necessarily rely on Avast—other programs might be used depending on the system and needs.

Go back to 1709. I needed to use my HTPC from 1803 because my games would crash after 10 to 30 minutes. After reinstalling 1709, once I passed the grace period, I added my apps and games and never experienced another crash.

I’m certain about this since I’ve handled the customer before. The remaining two are still unidentified. I plan to move data to an external drive, reinstall and re-upload temporarily. I’m trying a bit of a loop to force the upgrade again. Make a USB with Windows Media Creation and use these steps: boot into blank desktop, press CTRL+R, type CMD, press enter. Enter E, then type setup.exe and press enter. Follow the prompts to see if it auto-upgrades and restores everything properly. It’s worth a try now—reinstalling isn’t an option and rollback won’t work.

I became frustrated and checked every possibility... None of these solutions function. They either don’t work or simply ignore my attempts.

Sorry, there was an error with the last webpage quote. The final slash should have no spaces after "upgrade." This issue has been fixed for many, including myself while trying to recover my partner's laptop (she relies on it for teaching). I found the solution and appreciate the community posts. It was here... www,reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/815vim/the_latest_update_debacle_windows_10_1803_upgrade. If it doesn't appear as a link, just copy and paste. Cheers, Batpuppy
