The terms 32-bit and 64-bit Windows refer to the system architecture of the computer, not the processor type. They indicate whether the operating system runs on a 32-bit or 64-bit processor. Windows 7, for example, is available in both versions. A 64-bit Windows version can run on systems with 64-bit processors, while a 32-bit version works on 32-bit machines.

Typically, fresh games require 64-bit applications and processes. Standard 64-bit operating systems won't function on 32-bit hardware.
