Win10 Support for FireWire?
Win10 Support for FireWire?
For my ASUS Z97-C DAW configuration, I require FireWire compatibility with Windows 10. Despite extensive research, I haven’t found clear recommendations regarding present problems with FireWire. Some time ago, an update to Windows 10 disrupted FireWire functionality, and high-end recording boards from Allen & Heath that rely on it ceased working. In the early days of Windows 10, using the older FireWire driver from Win8.1 was suggested as a workaround. I possess that outdated driver but haven’t installed it yet. I’m seeking confirmation on the most recent Windows 10 release that still supports FireWire.
The board you've mentioned doesn't have a FireWire port, which leads me to assume you're running a FireWaire card/adapter on the system. if so, please pass on the make and model of said card. To add, the issue is indeed the OS as FireWire support was pulled with subsequent updates though you can manually add/install the drivers in compatibility mode.
Right click installer>Properties>Compatibility Tab>Windows X
(where X stands for the OS you want to emulate, from the drop down)
To clarify, Windows 10 support runs aground towards the end of this year, so you'll be left vulnerable without support from Microsoft. To also add, the subsequent updates were not just aesthetic changes but patches to plug security issues as well...so you're just introducing another issue in your build, if it's hooked to the www.
I wouldn't worry about Mcrosoft ending Win10 support. They will keep it for a long time, just like with Win7. Win7 received updates until the end of October this year, depending on the LTS plan. Updates are accessible to everyone through MS's official site for manual downloads, and also via Win server 2008 updates that work well. Additionally, some enthusiast communities created their own automated update systems using a modified WUP component, which skips MS subscription requirements and downloads directly from MS. So, comparing it, I expect another decade of stable Win10 support). If not, Win Server 2016 is built on the same foundation with ongoing updates available.
