Navigate to settings, personalization, start, and you'll see a button labeled "use full screen start menu." This seems to be activated based on the audio cues.

It seems the boot drive displays Windows 7 while the actual OS runs Windows 10, yet performance tests indicate an 8.1 OS. That's a bit confusing!

I located the issue. He actually turned on the tablet mode. Thanks for the assistance.
