The name you chose is unusual. I just installed a fresh version of Windows 7 on my PC and received an email offering Win 8.1 for free (Uni lyf 4 se win!). I was thinking about upgrading to Windows 10 when it launches, but now I’m unsure if I should stick with Windows 8.1 since I can upgrade to 10 later anyway? Any suggestions?

Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 customers can switch to Windows 10 without cost for an unlimited time, while Microsoft is providing the free change only for a one-year period. (The transition remains valid forever)

I don't see any rainy Sunday in the outlook; stick with 7 I guess. The difference between 7 and 8.1 is minimal unless you're reinstalling everything.

I'm not you and a 10% difference doesn't matter that much.

Windows 8.1 has been optimized for performance and compatibility with UEFI boards. You can decide whether to invest time in upgrading for improved speed.

As long as motherbrain Microsoft provides a genuine key, and not just a student or MSDN key, it seems acceptable.

It might not be worthwhile given the upcoming Windows 10 release. Plus, a University license could be ineligible for that version.

I'm confused about what you're talking about. I believed it was available for a year before you needed to purchase it again. The issue is that I just installed Windows 7 yesterday, so my system has plenty of free space from other programs. I only have the essentials installed right now. Even if it isn't upgradable, I might just get Windows 10 for free from a university or simply buy it since that was the original plan.
