Greetings to you all! I'm not particularly skilled with technology, and I’m uncertain about whether my current selections – 1080p at 144Hz or 1080p at 240Hz for gaming – were the most suitable.

I recently acquired a secondhand GTX 1080 for €350, which unfortunately limits my ability to adjust this particular setting. I’m planning on purchasing a Ryzen 2600X for approximately €180, paired with a B450 Tomahawk motherboard at €100. I’ll also be getting 2x8GB of Corsair Vengeance RAM, 3200MHz, for €100. For now, I’ll settle with a 500GB SSD costing around €50 and a power supply in the €50-70 range. My remaining hardware budget is roughly €500.

I’d like to know if this configuration will deliver satisfactory frame rates for competitive play in games such as Counter-Strike, PUBG, Siege, and Apex Legends at 144Hz or 240Hz. In my region, I can find a 144Hz monitor for around €200 or acquire a Dell Alienware AW2518HF 240Hz monitor from a friend for €280. Should I opt for the higher refresh rate display, or will my system be unnecessarily powerful, making a 140Hz monitor and investing the remaining funds into further hardware improvements a more sensible approach? Apologies for the length of this discussion and the numerous questions; I’m finding it a little perplexing. Thank you in advance for your guidance, and please forgive any shortcomings in my English.

I recommend selecting a 144Hz display. Current processors typically won't achieve 240 frames per second in contemporary, high-fidelity games. Opting for the $164.89 Ryzen 5 2600 would be a sensible choice, as it’s slightly overclocked compared to the 2600x while utilizing identical chips. The Tomahawk motherboard is a dependable selection. Regarding power supplies, invest in a robust 550-watt unit from Corsair, EVGA, or Seasonic—avoiding budget options due to the potential for hardware damage. The Crucial MX500 is an excellent SSD value. Here’s a breakdown of pricing in the United States:

Regarding power supplies, consider a dependable 550-watt unit from Corsair, EVGA, or Seasonic. Many inexpensive PSUs are available, and a failure could harm your components. The Crucial MX500 is a respectable SSD for its price range.

Here are the US prices:

Thank you for your response!

I reside in Greece, and power supplies tend to be quite costly there. I've seen videos online suggesting that even if you can’t achieve 240 frames per second, it might still feel smoother than using a 144Hz display. If I purchase the 2600, would it be necessary to overclock in order to attain sufficient performance? If so, would a B450 Tomahawk be suitable for overclocking my processor?

My display boasts a refresh rate of 240Hz, and I notice a clear distinction when compared to a 144Hz screen. Utilizing the 2600 processor, you’ll experience a minor performance improvement through overclocking. Furthermore, the tomahawk system successfully handles overclocking the 2600.
