which cooler and motherboard are you pairing with your cpu? what kind of case are you using? in general, the rtx 5070 represents a significant upgrade compared to the rtx 3060. the rtx 3060 matches a card from three generations back (class 70 nvidia 2070) and is slower than the 2070 super. so you’re essentially getting a three-generation improvement. but in reality, the rtx 5070 isn’t the top choice overall—it only offers 12gb of VRAM and barely surpasses its predecessor while being slower than the 4070Ti super. plus, it’s quite expensive right now.

These Intel X00K/S CPUs are built to maximize clock speeds without exceeding 100°C, and they perform well with 200-320w stock on Z motherboards, making it simple to avoid thermal throttling.

According to IIRC 12900k, a dual-tower cooler should work fine and won't cause overheating, but perhaps a higher-quality cooler would be better.

Except for a few coolers, most of them will reach 90C or higher when pushed. If he experiences thermal throttling during light games, he probably needs to replace the CPU and test again; if it keeps throttling, a better cooler is likely required. This recommendation applies to an air cooler if it fits his case.

In isolation and based on your payment, this card remains decent. Many negative opinions stem from its lack of significant improvement over the 40 series models, particularly the 4070 super, which performs very similarly. The 12GB of VRAM also draws criticism, as it could impact performance in certain scenarios.

At 4K resolution, some games may require compromises on texture quality settings compared to cards with 16GB of VRAM. Titles like the latest Indiana Jones games are especially demanding in terms of VRAM usage. Ray Tracing further increases memory demands versus traditional raster techniques.

The situation largely depends on the games you play, but future adjustments might be necessary. I own a 4070 super and run at 1440p, which reduces VRAM needs.

Concerning the CPU, could you verify the cooler you're using? The 12900k was challenging to manage, so this model enhances cooling. In gaming at 4K, I wouldn't anticipate major thermal throttling with a 5070, as long as the GPU is properly supported unless the cooler falls short for the chip.

Please confirm the cooler to help determine the best path forward and find a suitable resolution.

The i9K/S chips operate extremely intensely. He likely requires significantly more than just a decent cooler. A superior board with high-quality VRM, an effective airflow case, and suitable air pressure at comfortable room temperatures would be ideal.

The 5070 isn't a bad card, but it's just not priced well right now. With so few options available, you're likely forced to grab whatever you can. Your 12900K won't slow things down much, it's still a solid CPU. I'd focus on improving the throttling issue—maybe upgrade the cooler and get a better case with improved airflow when you can.

Thanks to all the feedback you've shared.
I've taken out the side panel of my case to maintain a cooler environment.
My cooler is...
Noctua NH-U12S, Premium CPU Cooler with NF-F12 120mm Fan (Brown)

I currently receive around 60 fps in Horizon Forbidden West. I'm pleased with the RTX 5070 but am eager to try a newer title. Would God of War Ragnarök be suitable for testing? And I don't notice any CPU limitations!
Edit. Just a thought. Do different GPUs affect sharpness? I had to increase the sharpening on my TV.
