If you're planning to keep or erase the drive, I recommend performing a full format using DOD wipe; a complete format is sufficient. If you choose to retain the drive, simply run a recovery program once after the full format. The process will reveal nothing missing for recovery—just ensure the drive is clean. If you still want to destroy it, perhaps it's just being overly careful, but even if someone like Wizkid found the drive using an unknown method, there would still be nothing recoverable.
