Hello, my current setup includes an i7 13700KF and an RTX 3080 with 10GB of VRAM. However, I need to upgrade to an RTX 4090 for a deep learning project. The existing system has a Corsair HX850 Platinum PSU. Will this power supply be sufficient? Nvidia suggests a 850W model, but aftermarket options typically offer 1000W units. None of the components are currently overclocked. I plan to purchase the Gainward RTX 4090 24GB Phantom, as it’s the most affordable option available.

The Guru3D review mentions that an 850w should suffice. The HX850 is considered a top model and should easily outperform it. Gainward GeForce RTX 4090 Phantom GS received positive feedback, running smoothly during testing. This card, along with others, appears capable of handling demanding tasks well.

Hey there,
The PSU needs to be at least 850 to support that GPU. Transient power spikes might affect older PSU models.
I’m thinking about going for 1000w or more, depending on the rest of the specs. Which system should I pair it with?
Corsair RMX 1000w are really durable and of high quality.
None of the setups listed here will handle that GPU power. You’ll also need a CPU upgrade, even if you go with a 3700x

The Guru3D review mentions that an 850w should suffice and praises the HX850 as a top-tier device, confident it can outperform it slightly. Gainward GeForce RTX 4090 Phantom GS (Page 6) follows up with their updated version of the RTX 4090, which performs well in testing. The review notes that while a 1000w ATX 3.0 PCIe 5.0 unit would be ideal, the current setup is adequate.

Isn't the I7 13700KF suitable for an RTX 4090? It's a last generation 16-core CPU. The power supply I have is about two years old and, according to what I understand, has a ten-year warranty. As I said, I require the GPU to train a Deep Learning Model; otherwise, the RTX 3080 would already meet my needs for gaming at 1440p.

Thank you for your response, I won't stress both the GPU and CPU simultaneously. I just need the GPU to operate at full capacity during model training, so I think I'll be okay. I'll test with this PSU and if I encounter issues, I'll consider upgrading.

That's what I suggest. I wouldn't swap an HX850 unless there was a real necessity, unless you have significant funds and want the newest features. I'd at least test it out first—probably you'll be okay—but if you encounter any power-related issues, they're likely caused by transient spikes or surges. Then you'd need to upgrade right away.

Sorry about the confusion. I didn't realize the 3700x was mentioned. I assumed you were using a Ryzen 3700x, but actually your processor is suitable for the 4090.

I received the GPU today (Gainward RTX 4090 Phantom). There were no issues, even during simultaneous stress tests on both CPU and GPU.
