Hi everyone, I bought a Gigabyte Z170-Gaming K3 from eBay for £17.50. The seller said it powers on fine, but then mentioned the reason for selling was that the PSU inside failed and they weren’t sure if it caused any lasting damage to the motherboard. The board looks brand new, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The only sure way to determine its effectiveness is by testing it. A failing PSU can indicate various issues. Did it burst? Did it shut down quietly? Did it catch fire?

It's nearly impossible to confirm until you try it and run some tests. But if the previous owner moved the PSU and the PC still boots, it should likely be okay.

Generally, the mainboard stays okay even if the PSU fails... you might want to test it just in case, since PSUs can malfunction in various ways and sometimes carry components.

The sale of the PSU remains unclear to me. The seller only mentioned that they had a Gigabyte Z170 Gaming K3 motherboard available for sale, either as spare parts or for repairs. The board came from a system where the power supply failed, but it powers on and boots. I’m unsure if any damage occurred during the PSU failure. I’m offering it as spares or repairs and plan to test it thoroughly. I’m curious about common issues that might arise if a PSU fails, but I don’t think the board was damaged beyond repair.

If the PSU handled that situation, it doesn't guarantee the motherboard will show marks. If it exploded, the motherboard might need extra protection, though we can't be certain without testing.
