I purchased the Steam Deck 512 last year and it has barely exceeded ten hours of use. I’ve thought about selling it, but a question keeps coming to mind. Is it possible? And is it a suitable upgrade for my HTPC?

I’ve been looking to swap out my 2016 Alienware R2 console, which I rely on as a home theater PC and is becoming slow even during web browsing. I don’t want to invest heavily in mini PCs like the Minisforum or Beelinks. Would the Steam Deck be a better choice? Since I expect it to outperform cheaper alternatives when gaming, I’ve been checking out options.

I already have a dock with HDMI and three USB ports for connecting my computer monitor to configure EMUDECK. I’m still uncertain about how well the Steam desktop would handle web browsing and streaming from my Synology NAS.

I haven't used the Steam Deck for streaming online, but I've experimented with Desktop Mode and frequently visited the web for console modding. Browsing and downloading are always smooth; performance hasn't been an issue most of the time. You already have the setup, so try it out if you want. If it doesn't work, you can later upgrade to a Mini PC or laptop. The Steam Deck OLED also has better hardware and WiFi 6E support compared to a Mini PC. Hope this helps, stay safe.
