Will I be able to overclock?
CPU model is AMD FX 4300 (unlocked). Motherboard is ASRock 960GM/U3S3 FX. Power supply is ATX Switching Power Supply A-650BR. Current CPU speed is 3.8 Ghz, and I aim to boost it to about 4.6 Ghz. I want to know if I can increase the speed without upgrading hardware, and if so, what components need replacing.
No, it's not advised to overclock at all with those specifications.
this motherboard isn't ideal for overclocking as it only supports a 3+1vrm configuration, which may limit your OC stability to around 4.2ghz without throttling. You should also consider upgrading your CPU cooler; the previous FX models are noisy and not very efficient under heavy use.
The motherboard isn't ideal for overclocking due to its limited 3+1vrm spec, which may restrict OC stability to around 4.2ghz without throttling. Upgrading the CPU cooler would help, as the current stock FX units are noisy under heavy use. As a short-term fix, could overclocking to 4.2ghz be feasible with a better cooler? You're looking for extra performance while saving for a new setup.
