It seems you're wondering if your internet speed is higher than advertised. Checking multiple sources like Ookla, Google, and your provider's tests shows a discrepancy between the stated and actual speeds. Also, despite having 180 Mbps, your Steam download remains slow—only 15-30 Mbps. Could background processes or network congestion be affecting performance?

Internet performance is expressed in megabits. The download and upload rates you see are given in megabytes. 1 megabit equals 0.125 megabyte. When your actual speed exceeds what you’re billed for, it’s typical to notice fluctuations in your connection quality.

Steam tracks file transfers in megabytes each second. That means your speed is quite solid. Just make sure you confirm that a 10GB download actually lasts about an hour and a half.

Many suppliers add extra capacity in a specific way, which is why you often see phrases like 'another 20 megabit.' Additionally, since there are 8 bits in a byte, an 8-bit rate equals roughly 1 megabit per second.
