WiFi interruptions are common issues.
Hello everyone, I'm currently staying at my parents' house during the holidays, and my laptop is experiencing some internet problems. The connection works fine most of the time, but every now and then it stops receiving data for about 20 to 30 seconds. I’m not losing connection to the router or modem, just the data flow. I attached a screenshot from my task manager that seems to illustrate the issue better than I can explain.
I'm using a 64-bit Windows 10 Asus laptop. I've checked for drivers, tried an older one, and used the Asus Wi-Fi repair tool (which feels a bit odd). The built-in Asus software doesn't show any problems or outdated BIOS. My system runs an i5-11357G integrated Iris Xe graphics, Intel SSD, and 16GB RAM.
My parents use Xfinity internet, and no other devices are having this issue. I've restarted the modem and laptop several times. I ran a full DNS flush and set my IPv4 DNS to point to Google's servers. This is unusual, and I couldn't find much information online about it. I'm not very comfortable with network troubleshooting, so if you need more details, please let me know. Thanks for your help!
The Wi-Fi chip is defective. I experienced overheating because it was positioned above the NVMe drive. Start by resetting the Wi-Fi driver. If that doesn’t work, try removing and reinserting the chip. If neither resolves the problem, replace the faulty chip.
Did you encounter a problem with your Asus laptop before? I believe I’m still under warranty, so I might bring it in after the new year if that applies.
See if it's covered under the warranty. If not, it might be something straightforward to fix yourself.
Thanks for clarifying. I understand you're considering soldering or replacing the chip. If it matches your model, it should be straightforward. My laptop is likely one of the more affordable ASUS models, though it doesn’t have any visible issues. I’ll check it out tomorrow, but that seems like a reasonable plan given how hot it gets even while streaming.
If you start it, I recommend cleaning the fan with compressed air and reapplying paste to the CPU. It’s quite straightforward—just search for tutorials if you’re unsure. This will really benefit you in the long term. I actually use a thermal grizzly on my laptop, so that works well for me.
