I'm moving from a Zen 2 chip. For those who need an upgrade or are setting up a new PC, if Zen 3 works well, the processor they receive should stay useful for a long time before another upgrade is necessary.
Your current system is nearly ten years old. Upgrading to AM5 would be great, but you’d rather not wait another year or two. It seems your next machine will likely be AM6 or even AM7 soon.
I generally purchase the motherboard and processor together to match the performance I need, avoiding upgrades until a complete overhaul becomes necessary. This approach has served me well for most of the past five years. The only exception was when a friend asked for a 2700X, and the 3900X became extremely expensive. Now I deeply regret it, as the system has consistently performed poorly. BIOS configurations keep changing, fans behave erratically, and the boot process frequently fails unless I revert to default settings. Since upgrading to Zen 2 on my B450, I’ve realized it might be an issue specific to AsRock chips. Honestly, I wish I had stuck with the 2700X—it worked perfectly. Overall, this experience has made me avoid similar situations in the future. Most users don’t need to worry about updates beyond their graphics card for a long time.
I’m not upgrading for anything right now. My current setup runs at 1440p and the extra difference won’t matter much. Spending another $500 on a CPU and motherboard at the end of the AM4 life doesn’t seem worth it. I think I’ll keep what I have for about five years before moving on. With a 3800x and an RTX 3080, I’m already ahead in power compared to next-gen consoles. I’ll lower the settings over time. When a cheap 4K 144Hz monitor becomes available and there are cards that can hit that frame rate, I’ll invest and build a new PC. I was using a 2080 Super in this machine and it performed perfectly—no issues at all. I sold the 2080S for $650 before the RTX 3080 came out, which means only a small $100 expense to switch, so I’m comfortable for now.
You can inquire about the reasons, but it's worth considering whether the motherboard is suitable for the CPU you plan to install. If it works, swapping might not be necessary, saving time and resources.
It only works when you also upgrade your tier simultaneously. When someone lacks funds for their initial build and opts for a 2400, expecting a 3800 replacement next year, generational upgrades usually don’t justify the cost.
I’m counting on it and hoping for a breakthrough that will bring better results than just small gains from my three-year-old CPU.
